STOLEN SIGHT

“FAITH, THIS ISN’T permanent,” Kristin says, touching her cool hand to my cheek.

I don’t answer her. Betrayal runs hot down my cheeks, my tears searing across my skin to drip onto my aching heart. Without my sight, I can’t access the veil. Without access to the veil, I can’t pray for divine intervention from Jess. I never thought I’d ask for it again, but I feel so lost and hopeless, trapped by the darkness of my stolen vision in a world I no longer trust to care for me.

Ezekiel shifts me in his arms, breathing his dark chocolate breath in my hair. From the sound of it, at least five hellhounds slink around somewhere nearby. A car door slams at the same time the whoosh of the door to a building, possibly a house, opens. Two sets of footsteps thud in my ears over the sound of Ezekiel breathing, Kristin’s heart racing, and the rush of blood through my pounding head.

I clench my fingers, holding onto the single feather I accidentally pulled from Jess’s wings, trying to summon him to break through the veil to find me. I’ve contemplated igniting power in my hands a dozen times to burn it, because I know the dangers of angel feathers in my dad’s witch’s hands, but I’m afraid if I do, I’ll lose the last thing connecting me to Heaven.

“I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this,” Dad says, inhaling a small breath. His dress shoes crunch across the parking lot, growing in volume the closer he gets.

“Raphael, what’s going on?” Cadence’s voice cuts through the air, and I listen to her strut from the direction of the building. “What happened to Faith?”

I must look asleep as I hang helplessly in Ezekiel’s arms, refusing to even hold on.

“Her new watcher threatens her wellbeing with his need to yank her through the veil. She’s been through enough, and the only way to prevent this was to temporarily blind her.” Dad touches my face. “She’ll be fine come sunrise.”

Cadence gasps, clicking her heels across the ground as she moves closer. “What? Are you kidding me? Look at her. Something else is clearly wrong.”

Ezekiel tenses.

“Faith, Faith, can you hear me?” Cadence asks. Her footsteps stop. The subtle scent of her flowery perfume wafts through the air on a wave of her fear. “Why won’t you let me go near her, Raphael? You must know how hard these last few weeks have been on me thinking the angelic army killed her. I need to see her for a second. Please.”

“No,” Ezekiel says, answering for Dad. “I don’t trust you.”

“Ezekiel,” Cadence says.

Ezekiel shifts me, and Cadence gasps. The hum of his power buzzes in my ears.

Fear clenches my chest, and I suck in a breath and whisper, “Cadence, I don’t want you to see me like this. Please, stay back. I’m fine.”

I don’t know if she believes my lie, but she doesn’t persist, falling silent. I’m thankful she doesn’t because I’m useless in this state, and
